St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica (Santhome Church), Chennai

Named after Saint Thomas (one of the apostles of Jesus Christ), famously known as Sathome Church in Chennai was built in 16th century by the Portuguese. The white façade structure with terracotta tiled steep gable roof sustains the Neo- gothic style of Architecture. The enlarged arch windows and doors provide an explicit frame for interior lit and ventilation. The stained glass work on oblong roof and windows curtain the intricate pictures of that era. Nave, the central colossal area of the church, measuring about 112 feet by 33 feet projects a 40 feet high polished brown ceiling which is supported by white, curved arches on both sides. The exterior of Santhome Basilica depicts the decorative tracery, geometrical design and pinnacles are also the archetypal of Neo Gothic architecture. The slender tall towers of almost 155 feet from the ground, add height and massive appearance to the structure.
