Southern Rly: Will restore greenery

To mark World Environment Day, Southern Railway's Chennai Division conducted various programmes.

Divisional railway manager (DRM) Naveen Gulati administered a cleanliness pledge to railway officials, staff and scouts and guides volunteers at Chennai Central on Monday.

Tree saplings were planted in the garden area of the station. The DRM said the division would make efforts to plant trees lost during cyclone Vardah. Lectures were conducted by a retired Anna University professor and a botany professor of Madras Christian College.

Chennai police go green, vow to plant 10,000 saplings



The Chennai police turned green on World Environment Day , vowing to plant at least 10,000 saplings in phases in and around police stations in the city to mark June 5, the day the world celebrates nature. Commissioner A K Viswa nathan started the initiative by planting a sapling on the campus of the city police chief 's office in Vepery . Additional commissioners of police S N Seshasai (headquarters), K Sankar (South Chennai), deputy commissioners of police S Saravanan (headquarters) and A Radhika (administration) took part in the event.

Police officers also planted 1,000 saplings at the police quarters and the Royapuram police station. Additional commissioner of police, North Chennai, H M Jayaram, planted saplings at both locations.
