NGT forms team to probe illegal dumping of sewage in Delhi

Delhi: 26 April, 2022 (Times of India)

NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has formed a team headed by a retired Delhi High Court judge to investigate the matter of illegal dumping of sewage carried out by unauthorised trucks and vehicles on roads and drains across several locations in the city.

The situation is disturbing and stringent action required by the statutory authorities, particularly Delhi Jal Board, the tribunal stated.

The NGT stated that earlier in December 2021, too, such dumping was noted at a location in Sangam Vihar, where several vehicles were dumping sewage from septic tanks into the drains and roads rather than taking them to the designated STPs managed by DJB and PWD. The unscientific disposal violates Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and leads to serious adverse effects on the public health and the environment, it added.

Complaints of illegal sewage dumping were received from Gadaipur Bandh Road, Vasant Kunj Farm House, Gadaipur Bandh Road, Chandan Hola, Chhattarpur, Vasant Kunj, Rajpur Khurd, Ghitorni and other places.

There is a need to evolvea more effective system toprevent such incidents, the tribunal stated. “Violators need to be identified and proceeded against in the interest of rule of law, public health and environment.”
