Brief Report on GSDP Course
Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Green GDP

In line with the Skill India Mission of Hon’ble Prime Minister, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) utilizing the vast network and expertise of ENVIS Hubs/RPs, has taken up an initiative for skill development in the environment and forest sector to enable India's youth to get gainful employment and/or self-employment, called the Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP). The programme endeavours to develop green skilled workers having technical knowledge and commitment to sustainable development, which will help in the attainment of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), National Biodiversity Targets (NBTs), as well as Waste Management Rules (2016). 

In this context, SPA ENVIS RP on Human Settlements and their Impact on Environment, hosted by School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi had conducted the GSDP Course on "Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Green GDP". A series of lectures, field visits and hands – on training on map preparation and reading were delivered to the candidates during the course duration. 

This 16 day certificate course was started on 20th January, 2020 at Gandhi Peace Foundation, New Delhi with a total of 14 students. The students were selected through an interview process held at School of Planning and Architecture. The members of the Interview panel were:

  • Dr. Anil Kumar, Former Director, Environment Planning Department, Govt of NCT of Delhi,
  • Prof. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Head, Department of Transport planning, School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi,
  • Dr. B.C. Sabata, Former Director, Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Combating Climate Change, Govt. of NCT of Delhi,
  • Ms. Poonam Diwan, Additional Commissioner, Landscape Department, DDA, New Delhi
  • Dr. H.M.Naqvi, Chief General Manager, Tech- RCS, NHAI as the members of the Interview panel. 

The course had a panel of experienced resource persons from Delhi University, Indraprastha University and some series of special lectures by Dr. Govind Singh from Delhi Greens, a Delhi based NGO and Mr. Mohammad Uzair, Assistant Director, DDA. Various important topics like Concepts of Ecology and Vegetation, treatment and management of flood plains and buffer zones, National Capital Accounting, Documentation of Flora and Fauna etc. Students were also provided hands on training on GIS, remote sensing and its applications. Field visits were also organized to Asola Wildlife Sanctuary and Yamuna Biodiversity Park to enable the students to gain on- field exposure to study the ecological services of the protected areas.

The Valedictory Session for the course was organised on 12th February, 2020 at the host institution of the ENVIS centre (School of Planning and Architecture) which started off with a brief introduction by the coordinator followed by sharing of thoughts and suggestions for the course by the members present.  The students also shared their valuable feedbacks and their learning experience from the course followed by distribution of certificate issued by MoEF&CC.
